Sometimes, fake antivirus removal is not as easy as downloading and running programs such as Malwarbytes anti-malware, the free malware removal tool that is now popularly utilized as a downloadable too that can be used as a free fake antivirus remover. Many of the newly released fake antiviruses including the Total XP security, XP smart security 2010, Vista AntiMalware, Total Vista Security and many others are tricky and difficult to remove and thus can be removed by following the guide outlined below:

How to remove a fake antivirus

Click Start, Run. Type command and press Enter.

Type notepad and press Enter.

When Notepad opens. Copy all the text below into Notepad and save this to your desktop as exefix.reg. Make sure to change the Save as Type to “All Files”.

Double Click exefix.reg, click the Yes button once the Registry editor window pops up and reboot your PC

Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

At the end, be sure a check-mark is placed next to the following:
Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Click Finish.

If an update is found, Malbytes anti malware will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. Reboot your computer if you are prompted.

When completed, a log will open in Notepad.

If this doesn’t work, try to use a non infected PC to save Malwarebytes and exefix.reg into a removable drive before transferring them into your infected computer.

  1. Thank you. This seemed to work. AKM and their associated pop-ups literally blocked me from accessing any applications, programs or internet. Nothing else worked, but this did. Again, thanks for the malbytes link. Now I have to find a way to uninstall what remains of the bastards.

  3. This didnt work for me, I ran the .reg file but i got an error message: cannot import c:\documents and settings/muller/desktop/exefix.reg: the specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

    Im not massivly techincal so hopefully someone can point out where I went wrong. Would appreiciate a comment on the matter very much. Travisgm@btinternet.com
