Iphone 3G for Philippine Prepaid Users

When news of the July 11 release of Iphone 3G hit the internet yesterday, I was so excited not because of the new features but because of the new price. At a mere $199 for an 8GB Iphone 3G, it seems that owning an iphone now costs a lot cheaper. The problem is that buying the new iphone from the US online apple store requires a 2-year AT&T subscription and AT&T of course does not work in the Philippines.

The new Iphone 3G will be available for Philippine Prepaid UsersFortunately, the iphone 3G will reportedly be available in the country soon, thanks to a tie up between Globe Telecom and Apple, Iphone 3G for Philippine mobile users will be marketed later this year and it will not just be available to those who want to avail of the post paid subscription plans because Iphone 3G will also be sold to Globe prepaid users.

I wonder how much would be Globe’s price tag for the Iphone 3G particularly if they sell the device to prepaid users (I am a prepaid user). I also wonder if the gadget will be available in the country sooner through some local cellphone retailers.

i’m confused. a lot of people are saying that you would have to subscribe to a carrier network for around 2yrs, under a rather expensive plan. I think it would be more practical to buy the iPhone 3G unit then just get a prepaid sim. From what i heard, the iPhones (should) be sold at $199 (worldwide), so i guess, in pesos, that would be a bit less than 9k. Question is: Are they allowed to sell it for so much more, say 30k, roughly more than $500??

To the iPhone advocates: what would be the BEST feature of the new iPhone 3G that would convince people to buy the product? In terms of practicality, do you think that it would be worth buying (think of our Filipino setting)?

Thanks. Please shed some light on my issues. haha.

    Stella,

Please read http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/23/pre_paid_iphone_3g_customers_may_pay_600_for_handset_report.html and this http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2325255,00.asp. Iphones CAN be sold for more than the $199 price (especially if it is under a no contract plan, prepaid that is).

I will leave your next question to Steve Jobs or you can check out apple’s website.

Buying the iphone or not will depend on you the buyer regardless where you are (in Japan, US or in the Philippines) it depends IF YOU CAN. As for practicality, Filipinos may seem poor but you can always see people flocking in branded stores such as Lacoste and Havaianas. Some Filipinos can buy expensive products including the cellphone. Call it impractical if one buys an iphone and only receives a salary of 5 thousand pesos.

    Rhodilee:

Thanks for the input. hahaha although i am still trying to find the best and unique feature/s of the iPhone 3G. I would probably wait until text month (or so) and then study the feedbacks of the more courageous people who have purchased the iPhone.

    Thanks!

I also suggest that you also check out whether you would really need the features of the 3G iphone. It would be useless to buy gadgets whose functions you can’t really use :-)

    i already have an iphone
and because AT&T sim doesnt work here in the Philippines,iv decided to use my local sim that can provide call&txt service. But i have a problem about the services through net. I cant use itunes, youtube, ymail, safari cant install any apps..
quadrangle @ our school has a free wifi network so i ask for the password and i have conncted successfully, but when i tried those apps again, it says “cannot connect to the host”..
does it mean that the wifi signal was just weak or AT&T sim was the only solution for me to connect to the net.?help me pls..thnx.

Franzlane, I am not sure if AT&T can be used in the Philippines. I am neither an iphone user so I cannot give a good advice. Nevertheless, I hope iphone users who have figured out how to solve this problem can leave a word in this post.
