Filipinos Send One Billion Text Messages Per Day

It is no wonder that many consider the Philippines as the text capital of the world. Filipinos are avid users of the SMS (short messaging system). Every Filipino seems to own a cellphone from the dollar earning OFWs to household helpers earning around PhP 2000 a month ($50,000). The Philippines has again put a stronghold in it being called the world’s “text capital” as one billion text messages were reportedly sent everyday in 2007.

Yahoo tech news “Filipinos sent 1 billion text messages daily in 2007″ reported that PLDT (or smart?) has accommodated an average of 700-750 million text messages daily last year while Globe claimed to have sent 300-400 million text messages in its network.

Sim cards in the Philippines can be bought for as low as PhP 50 (just over one dollar) and refurbished or auctioned cellphones can be bought for at least PhP 1500 (approximately 40 dollars).
